Where are your products made?

Most of the lovely items in our shop are made in our studio in Alexandria, VA. We design and make as much as we can in house. A few of our products are printed or manufactured in another state but everything is made in the USA. We have a wonderful partnership with a family-owned printing company and woman owned manufacturer. We have chosen to outsource some products because we do not have the equipment or expertise to make that particular item. The dream is to one day be able to make all of our products in house.

Can I purchase a frame with my art print?

At this time, we do not offer framing services for our art prints. It is something we would like to do in the future and should we offer framing services, we will be sure to update our website with that information.

Any frames you see in product images are just pretty props and will not be included in your order. We source most of our frames from local craft and hobby stores, home décor stores, thrift stores or our own homes.

If you don’t have a frame you can still proudly display your shiny new CBTD art print. We recommend using a poster hanger, washi tape or an easel instead.

Do you accept bulk orders?

Some of our items are available for ordering in bulk. If you’re interested, please contact us for information regarding availability and pricing.

What is your creative process for designing and making new products?

It’s always so much fun to learn about different creative processes. While it would take way to long to explain exactly how we do what we do, we can give you a basic idea of what our creative process looks like most of the time. Our process changes depending on the type of product we are making.

Here’s a peek into our general creation process:

  1. We'll brainstorm ideas for new products/designs.

  2. We'll settle on an idea and sketch it out on paper.

  3. The sketch is turned into a painting. We love using watercolors and gouache but we'll also paint digitally. Sometimes, we'll also add some lettering or calligraphy.

  4. We'll digitize the painting, finalize the design and then print it.

  5. We love embellishing our paper goods after they've been printed. Sometimes, we'll add Howa little sparkle or shine just to take it up a notch (or two).

Our primary mediums are watercolor and gouache with a little bit of digital painting, in which case we use Adobe Fresco to draw and paint. We are completely self-taught and learned everything we know by picking up some paints and getting a feel for things. We watched others make art and learned about different techniques and ideas and put in a lot of trial and error to find what worked best for us. In the end, we found something we love.

We’ll be sharing little behind the scenes looks into our creative process on our blog and Instagram so check there for all the latest details.

What art supplies do you use?

We primarily watercolors to paint most of our designs. Our favorite brand is Windsor and Newton. We also use gouache for some of our designs and our favorite gouache brand is Holbein. We use both the acrylic and the non-acrylic gouache.

We use a variety of watercolor papers for our designs. It depends on what we’re painting. We primarily use Arches cold pressed watercolor paper for designing new products but we also use various Canson and Strathmore papers for illustrations we use on our website or Instagram. We also use a Strathmore watercolor sketchbook when we need to experiment a little before we design a product.

Our favorite brushes are Princeton brushes in either the Select Series or the Neptune line.

Our digital designs are made on Adobe Fresco and Photoshop. We use the free brushes offered by Adobe. We are fans of the various pencil, crayon and gouache brushes.

Did you go to art school?

Nope! We are completely self-taught and learning new things every day.

Who is Milo?

Milo is our little studio mascot and general overseer of all things Cherry Blossom Tree Designs. He’s a ginger domestic short haired tabby cat. He’s about 4 years old (we adopted him so we don’t know his exact birthdate). You can find him fiercely attacking the printers, sleeping in his fluffy pink bed or looking for bits of string to chase.
